Christmas morning can be an exciting time for children.

While many kids will tear through piles of presents on Christmas day, some are not so lucky.

You don’t have to look far and wide to find these kids.

Many of them are right here in Shelby County.

A quick look at some of the requests on the Angel Tree at Winn Dixie in Columbiana can really put Christmas in perspective.

The tree holds ornaments with wish lists for kids who were sexually and physically abused.

The children, represented by the Owens House, are already having a pretty tough time.

Throw in the prospect of little or no presents and Christmas doesn’t look as exciting for disadvantaged kids.

It is heartbreaking to think that a 10-year-old boy would have to ask for underwear for Christmas.

Boys that age are usually whining for the latest toys and gadgets, not worrying about the basic necessities.

How many children do you know that are asking for socks this year? or pants? or a belt? Well, more than 40 of them are at Winn Dixie in Columbiana, and with two weeks left until Christmas, those wishes are still hanging on the tree.

Those of us fortunate enough not to have to worry about such things should take the time to remember those who do.

One thing that is abundant every year is talk about the true spirit of the season.
