Eagles make history in Classic

George Drake scored 21 points, grabbed 7 rebounds and dished out 5 assists to lead the Calera Eagles to a 56-51 overtime win over Vestavia Hills in the Sneaky Pete’s Classic held at UAB last Saturday.

The Eagles fell behind early, being outscored 17-6 in the opening period of play. CHS cut the lead to 33-24 at the half by outscoring the Rebels 18-16 in the second quarter.

Calera cut into the lead further in the third period, outscoring VHHS 11-6 to being the score to 39-35 heading into the final period of play.

Head coach Robert Burdette’s Eagles then outscored Vestavia 12-8 in the fourth quarter to even the score at 47 each, forcing overtime.

Calera posted 9 points to Vestaiva’s 4 in the extra stanza to claim the win. The Eagles are the first Shelby County team and the first Class 2A team to participate in the event.

Charlie Jones was the only other Eagle in double figures in the win with 17 points. Jones also grabbed 10 rebounds to record a double-double.

Trey Russell chipped in 9 points, 5 assists and 4 steals for Calera and Dusty Downs scored 4 points and recorded 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals.

The win brought the Eagles’ record to 21-3 on the season and came on the heels of an 88-56 whipping of Lineville Friday night at Lineville.

In the Lineville win, the Eagles jumped out to an early 18-12 lead in the first period and never looked back. The Eagles extended that lead to 41-28 heading into the locker room at the half.

In the third period,m the Eagles scored early and often to put the game out of reach at 71-34 heading into the final period of play.

Drake and Jones combined for 46 points in the win with 25 and 21 points, respectively. Jones also grabbed 8 rebounds in the win.

Michael Ellison was the only other Eagle in double figures with 10 points and 7 rebounds. Russell and Glynn Dowdell each scored 8 points and Dowdell recorded 8 rebounds.

Calera Girls 51, Lineville 43

The Calera Lady Eagles improved their record to 14-1 with a 51-43 win over Lineville last Friday night in Lineville.

Shanavia Dowdell and Laquarius Wilson combined for 29 points in the win with 17 and 12 points, respectively.

The first period ended tied at 8-8 before Lineville outscored CHS 13-11 in the second quarter to take a 21-19 lead at the half.

Calera dominated the second half, outscoring Lineville 15-8 in the third period and 17-14 in the final stanza to take the 51-43 win.

Calera Girls 54,

Alabama Christian 46

Head coach Scott Gafford’s Lady Eagles claimed a 54-46 win over Alabama Christian in Montgomery last Tuesday behind 35 points from Dowdell. Dowdell hit 15-of-22 shots from the floor (.652) and 5-of-9 from the free throw line (.556) in the win. Dowdell also grabbed 8 rebounds and recorded 5 blocked shots and 5 assists in the win.

Wilson was the only other Lady Eagle in double figures with 10 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists.
