CVA boys, girls sweep AISA area tournament

The Coosa Valley Academy boys and girls teams swept through the competition at the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) Class 1A area tournament at CVA to claim championships last weekend.

CVA’s Kirby Johnson and Zach Rutledge were named Most Valuable Players of the tournament.

In the championship game last Saturday night, the Rebels defeated Shelby Academy 68-53 behind 31 points, eight assists and seven rebounds from Rutledge.

Casey Hall also posted a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Brandon Nix led the way on the boards for CVA with 16 rebounds and also chipped in eight points and Mitch Watley had 16 rebounds and six points.

The Lady Rebels also claimed the championship with a 20-18 win over Shelby Academy.

Molly Brasher led the way for CVA with eight points and 12 rebounds and Johnson had six points and three steals. Lori Patterson led the way on the boards with 15 rebounds.

Amanda Hoppers led the Lady Raiders with seven points.

The Lady Rebels made it to the championship game via a 46-14 win over Jefferson Christian Academy. At the half, the Lady Rebels were pitching a shutout at 30-0.

Johnson paced the Lady Rebels with 15 points while Brasher added 13. Kim Rutledge was also in double figures with 11 points.

The CVA varsity boys made it to the championship with a 85-75 win over JCA. Rutledge led the way with 45 points. Nix posted a double-double with 23 points and 16 rebounds. Watley was the only other Rebel in double figures with 10 points.
