Property tax levies set by county for 2003-04

The Shelby County Commission levied 2003-04 property taxes at its Monday morning meeting.

According to the resolution, the tax breakdown includes five mills in general taxes for the county &uot;on each one hundred dollars worth of taxable property.&uot;

Two-and-a-half mills is collected to build, repair, furnish and maintain government buildings or bridges in Shelby County.

The county collects one mill, or 10 cents on each $100 of taxable property, for a special school tax. This tax will be collected until 2017.

A second special 10-mill school tax is collected as well. This tax was originally voted on in 1988 as three mills and in 1989 as seven mills and will be collected until 2017.

A separate school three-mills is collected from those within the corporate limits of Birmingham, Hoover and Vestavia Hills. The tax was levied in 1997 and will continue until 2017.

The school systems outside the limits of Birmingham, Hoover and Vestavia Hills receive 11 mills. Three mills of the tax was levied in 1988 and an additional eight mills was levied in 1997. The tax will be collected until 2017.

Another four mills, one mill and three mills are earmarked for the school system as well.

The four-mill tax was levied in 2001 and will be collected until 2017.

The one-mill tax was levied in 1988 and will be collected until 2017.

The three-mill tax was levied in 2001 and will be collected until 2017.

The total millage adopted in the Shelby County portion of Birmingham, Hoover and Vestavia Hills is 29 mills.
