Shelby Academy’s Dewayne Kervin will receive the prestigious honor of induction into the Alabama Independent School Association’s Hall of Fame Monday, March 10 at a ceremony at the Civic Center in Montgomery.

Kervin said the honor was humbling.

&uot;I have had the privilege of knowing and working with most of the members of the Hall of Fame,&uot; Kervin said. &uot;They are people that I have respected and emulated over the years. It is an honor to be a member of any organization to which they belong. I am very appreciative and humbled to be inducted into this elite group.&uot;

Kervin began his teaching career at SA in 1979 as a history teacher, head basketball coach and assistant football coach. He later became the head football coach in 1981 and headmaster in 1982.

Kervin, an Andalusia native, graduated from Red Level High School in 1966 and attended the University of Alabama on academic scholarship.

In 1968 Kervin joined the United States Air Force, serving eight years including two years at Bitburg AB Germany and one year at Udorn AB Thailand.

After being honorably discharged at Nellis AFB, Nevada, he attended the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and received his B.S. degree in 1977.

Kervin, while at SA in the early years, attended the University of Montevallo where he received his M. Ed. in 1982, graduating with honors.

But the academic arena is not the only area Kervin has excelled. During his 24 years of service at Shelby Academy his football teams have advanced to the final four five times and have been crowned state champions once and state runners-up once.

He has been voted Coach of the Year three times. His basketball teams had 19 straight winning seasons, 10 Final Four appearances (eight of those in consecutive years) and two state runners-up teams.

&uot;Athletics have played a major role in my life since I was very young,&uot; Kervin said. &uot;I knew from those early years I wanted to be a coach. I have been a headmaster for 21 years but I am known at Shelby Academy and throughout the AISA as ‘Coach Kervin’, a title of great personal pride.&uot;

Kervin’s service to the AISA include coaching two All-Star basketball teams, three All-Star football teams and serving as president of the AISA Coaches Association for one year. He has served on the State Athletic Committee and Hall of Fame Committee for three years and has also served as the District VII Headmaster’s Representative for 11 years and Coaches Representative for five years.

&uot;My sons, Jason and Josh, grew up in the AISA family and benefited greatly from being a part of it,: Kervin said. &uot;Coaching them has been a highlight of my life.&uot;

Jason, a senior at the University of Montevallo, and Josh, a freshman at Shelby Academy, both have aspirations of coaching.

&uot;I have been blessed with players that made the sacrifices necessary to be successful,&uot; Kervin said. &uot;I would like to thank them for their contributions to this moment. I would like to thank the people of Shelby Academy, past and present, for their support over the years. They have been my extended family for 24 years. Most of all, I would like to thank my wife, Anne, my ‘biggest fan.’ Any success that I have I owe to her unselfish dedication.&uot;
