Robbery leads to manhunt

Two men, suspected of robbing the J&M Food Mart in Pelham, were taken into custody Tuesday following a two-hour manhunt that ended just north of Clanton.

According to a release from the Pelham Police Department, the men allegedly entered the store at separate times, drew a handgun and demanded money from the clerk.

At approximately 9:05 a.m. the Chilton County Sheriff’s Department reported an Alabama State Trooper involved in a high-speed chase down Interstate 65. The two men were driving a silver Nissan Frontier, that later was found to have been stolen from Montgomery.

The two men ditched the truck near the 216-mile marker and then fled into the woods.

An extensive search of the woods ensued, involving local, regional and state law enforcement agencies.

The men were later apprehended near Chilton County Road 43 just north of Clanton shortly before 10:30 a.m.

The two were taken into custody without incident.

&uot;This is the way it is supposed to work,&uot; Chilton County Sheriff Billy Wayne Fulmer said. &uot;No one got hurt and the suspects were taken into custody without incident.&uot;

Deputies, who were involved in the search, recovered key evidence from the robbery, including the weapons suspected to have been used in the robbery along with an undisclosed amount of money.

Officials have not released the names of the suspects.

The two are currently being held in the Chilton County Jail and will later be transported to Shelby County to face charges.

After the two men fled into the woods, Alabama State Troopers and the Chilton County Sheriff’s Department requested the aid of the Department of Public Safety’s helicopter and a team of search dogs from Bibb County.

According to Fulmer, the two were instrumental in the capture of the suspects
