Rainy weather over the last few weeks in Shelby County have played havoc on local baseball teams and their schedules.

At Shelby Academy, the Raiders have yet to play a game &045; not one.

&uot;It’s a mess. It’s the biggest mess I have ever seen,&uot; said Shelby Academy headmaster Dewayne Kervin. &uot;We had a few games at the beginning of the year rescheduled due to basketball season running late, but we have had four games cancelled or postponed due to rainy weather.

&uot;Our field is in horrible shape and our baseball and softball teams can’t even practice.&uot;

At Vincent, the Yellow Jackets were only able to get in one game last week and have had four games postponed.

Todd Davis’ team was able to play B.B. Comer last Friday &045; at B.B. Comer.

&uot;Our field is almost completely under water,&uot; Davis said. &uot;It’s making it hard for us to even practice, much less actually play a game. Maybe we can get them made up down the road.&uot;

The Yellow Jackets were scheduled to play a doubleheader at Moody Monday, but that game was cancelled due to rain. Davis said his team will be lucky to get any games in the rest of this week.

At Cornerstone, Tim Smith said the baseball team was able to play just one games last week as well &045; a lopsided win over Marion Academy at Cornerstone.

One of the few teams in the county actually getting games in at a regular pace is Shelby County High School.

&uot;Our field is in pretty good shape,&uot; head coach Lee Hall said. &uot;We did a lot of work to it before the season started and it seems to be working.

&uot;We took up the red clay dirt which was the infield and replaced it with a new type of dirt, Crimson Stone, which absorbs the water better and is not as sticky or slippery when it gets wet. I have used that type of dirt everywhere I have been.&uot;

Hall came to SCHS from UAB where he was an assistant coach. Before that, Hall was an assistant at Central Alabama Community College for nine years.

SCHS (1-9) was able to get in three games last week &045; an 11-1 loss to Isabella last Tuesday; a 12-0 loss to Homewood Friday and a 10-0 loss to McAdory Saturday.

In the three games the Wildcats collected a total of only six hits.

David House (0-3) was tagged with the loss in the Isabella game. He pitched 2 1/3 innings, giving up 9 hits, 9 runs (5 earned), struck out 3 batters and gave up 5 walks.

Stephen Barrow was 2-for-2 at the plate with 1 run scored and Drew Holsomback was 1-for-2 at the plate. Dane Vansant had an RBI sacrifice fly in the loss.

In the loss to Homewood, Justin Mallory (1-1) got the loss, pitching 2 1/3 innings allowing 9 hits and 11 runs (3 earned). He struck out 1 batter and gave up 2 walks.

The team had only 1 hit in the loss, a single by Nick Jones.

Jake Waever (0-2) got the loss in the McAdory game, giving up 7 runs on 4 hits in just 1 inning of work. He gave up 2 walks in the inning.

Marshall Salas pitched 2 innings, giving up 2 hits and 1 run, striking out 1 batter. Drew Davis also pitched 2 innings, giving up no hits and 2 earned runs on 3 walks.

Dave Cofer was 1-for-2 at the plate and Vansant got the only other Wildcat hit, going 1-for-3 at the plate.

At Thompson, Pat Hamrick’s team has also had bad luck when it comes to wet weather.

&uot;We’ve just had a lot of rain lately and our field is not in the best shape in the world,&uot; Raybon said.

&uot;It holds water pretty bad and when it finally looks like it’s drying out, it rains again. We’ve had three or four games rained out already this season.&uot;

The Warriors (8-4) were scheduled to play Stanhope-Elmore Monday, but that game was cancelled due to rainy weather. Thompson is slated to play at Brookwood Thursday &045; weather permitting.

The Warriors managed to get in two games last week, a 15-1 win over Bibb County last Monday and a 3-1 win over Chelsea Wednesday.

Tood Wood got the win over Bibb County, pitching 4 innings, giving up just 2 hits and striking out 5 batters. C.J. Richardson pitched the fifth inning, giving up no hits and allowing 1 walk.

Malachi Gandy went 3-for-3 at the plate for Thompson with 2 RBI and Brett Rushing was 3-for-4 with 3 RBI.

Gavin McGuire was 2-for-4 on the day and Matt Myles went 2-for-4 with 1 RBI. Freddie Brackin was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI.

In the Chelsea game Wally Franklin (4-1) pitched 7 innings, giving up 2 hits, no earned runs and 2 walks to get the win. Franklin also went 1-for-3 at the plate with 1 RBI.

Brett Rushing was 2-for-3 batting and Aaron Barranco was 3-for-3 with 3 singles.

The Warriors were able to get a game under way last Friday against Stanhope-Elmore, but that game was called in the third inning due to rain.

At Montevallo, Kevin Raybon’s Bulldogs have had little luck getting in games as well.

&uot;We’ve had eight games rained out so far, and we have a game scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday, March 18),&uot; Raybon said.

&uot;The way the weather looks, we’ll be lucky to get that one in. It depends on how well our field drains.&uot;

Montevallo (2-4) was able to get in one game last week, a 10-1 area loss to Holt last Friday night.

Chris Wallace got the loss, pitching 4 innings and giving up 8 runs (3 earned) and striking out 2 batters.

&uot;We actually went ahead first 1-0 and then it was all Holt,&uot; Raybon said.

&uot;We had chances to get out of innings without giving up any runs, but we made a lot of two-out errors and gave them a lot of scores.&uot;

Heath Pickett doubled and scored on a single by Steadman Benton to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead before Holt put 10 runs on the scoreboard.

Montevallo is scheduled to play Billingsley Thursday afternnon at home at 4 p.m
