OMHS tennis finishes second

The Oak Mountain Lady Eagles’ tennis team placed second at the Benjamin Russell High School Invitational behind solid play from Mallory Waites, Danielle Brown and Amy Moultrie.

The tournament was held in Alexander City Friday and Saturday, April 11-12. Teams included Oak Mountain, Auburn, Austin, Benjamin Russell, Bob Jones, Bradshaw, Cullman, Decatur, Enterprise, Gadsden, Grissom, Hoover, Vestavia, Walker and West Point.

Walker High School finished the tournament in the top spot with 64 total team points. Oak Mountain had 56 points to claim the second spot and Vestavia scored 49 team points to come in third.

The Lady Eagles were in 5 out of 6 singles finals and the No. 1 doubles finals.

No. 2 Waites of OMHS defeated Enterprise 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 in the No. 2 singles finals.

In the No. 6 singles finals, Oak Mountain’s Brown beat Vestavia 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in the No. 6 singles finals.

In No. 1 doubles, Moultrie and Waites of Oak Mountain defeated Enterprise 7-6, 7-6.

&uot;We played with a lot of heart and determination because we were missing two of our seniors and the underclassmen had to step up and play really big,&uot; OMHS head coach Toni Leo said.

&uot;Mallory did a great job winning both singles and doubles titles with two very long finals she had to play.

&uot;This will help us as we get ready for sectionals and state in the weeks to come.&uot;
