Pelham sophomore David Clyborn cleared 6-1 to claim the high jump title and lead the Panthers to the Shelby County Track Championship at Briarwood Monday afternoon.

Clyborn’s teammate and close friend, Aaron Jones, finished second place when he clipped the bar at the same height.

The Panthers scored 172 points overall to claim the title, with Briarwood finishing a close second with 152. Oak Mountain came in third with 105 while Vincent finished fourth with 67.

The Thompson Warriors claimed the fifth spot with 37 points.

Jones, a senior at Pelham, has been one of the area and the state’s best this season and came in as the favorite in the competition Monday. Clyborn, who gets advice from the elder Jones in his sport,

was 1 inch better Monday.

Vincent’s Ken Abrams finished first in both the triple jump and (43-1) and the 100-meter dash (10.82 seconds).

In girls’ competition, the Lady Eagles of Oak Mountain ran away with the title with 206 points. The closest competition was Pelham with 85 points, followed by Briarwood with 78.

Vincent and Briarwood tied for fourth with 40 points each.

OMHS’ Jessica Hobbs and PHS’ Gabby Williams had the top performances on the girls’ side.

Hobbs won the 300-meter hurdles, the 110-meter hurdles and the triple jump.

Williams was first in the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash
