The Columbiana City Council cleared the way for a $2 million Highway 25 Improvement Project that will be funded entirely by state and federal funds.

At its regular Tuesday, April 15 meeting, the council adopted resolutions for a traffic signal maintenance agreement in connection with Highway 25 and other intersection improvement projects.

Seale said the project includes four Highway 25 intersections plus Old Highway 25 West and Walton Street.

The intersections on 25 include Highway 70, highways 34, 47 and Old Highway 25 East.

The council also approved a $300,000 total enhancement project between Shelby County and the city for the Columbiana Sports Complex.

Seale said the city will match $50,000 or 16.66 percent from its bond for the project.

He said the money will be used to add a bike and walking trial, playground and picnic pavilion to the complex on McDow Road which includes four baseball fields and a football field.

In other matters, the council:

Approved the end of police officer Nick Kirkland’s new employee probationary period.

Approved a step increase for police officer Jonathan Oliver to $14.49 per hour.

Approved a maintenance agreement between the city and Jeff Jones for ballpark maintenance in the amount of $600 per week.

Approved the transfer of funds from

the General Fund to Ball Park Construction

in the amount of $1,805.83 (city portion) for park and recreation expenses and $3,006.63 from the General Fund to the Library Account for current expenditures.

Approved the reimbursement to the Columbiana Girl’s Softball League for an invoice from Birmingham Restaurant Supply Company in the amount of $2,559.06 to be reimbursed from the Park and Recreation Board Account.
