Three Cornerstone Christian School Charger baseball players were recently honored by the Alabama Independent School Association (AISA), including one participating in the AISA East-West All Star game.

Chris Wills, Jeremy Walden and Jon Ray were all named to the AISA Class 1A All State Tournament Team recently when the Chargers finished the season as Class 1A runners-up.

Wills, a recent graduate of CCS, was also tagged to participate on the East squad in the All Star game, played at Huntingdon College in Montgomery.

Wills, as a senior as CCS, finished the season with a .355 batting average. Wills was successful in 24-of-25 steal attempts as the Chargers finished the season 16-8 in only the school’s third year in existence.

In the Class 1A baseball tournament, Wills went 4-for-8 at the plate (.500) and was walked five times.

Wills scored five runs, was 3-for-4 in steal attempts and was hit by a pitch.

In addition to baseball, Wills played football, was a member of the weightlifting team and ran track at CCS.

In track, Wills finished fourth in the state in the 200 meters.

Wills was recently selected as the Shelby County Reporter Athlete of the Week.

Walden, a senior next season with the Chargers, finished the year with a .349 batting average and led the team with 11 doubles on the season.

In the Class 1A state tournament, Walden, from his catcher’s position, threw out four runners attempting to steal second base.

On the season, Walden picked off nine runners attempting to steal.

At Cornerstone, Walden participated in baseball, football and weightlifting.

Walden has been selected twice as the Shelby County Reporter Athlete of the Week.

Ray, a freshman next season with the Chargers with many years left to strike out batters, finished the season with a 9-1 record.

Ray won both games he pitched at the Class 1A state tournament during the Chargers’ runner-up finish.

Ray finished the season with an earned run average (ERA) of under 3.0.

Ray plays baseball and basketball for the Chargers.

Chargers’ head coach Tim Smith said he and the school are proud of the boys’ accomplishments.

&uot;Players with that amount of skill and commitment, along with their outstanding character and dedication, are what make this school and its members proud,&uot; Smith said. &uot;These guys are shining examples, both on and off the field. They should be proud of what they have accomplished and Jeremy and Jon I’m sure will accomplish more at CCS, as will Chris in his future endeavors.&uot;
