The Columbiana City Council has selected a company to complete its $1.8 million downtown revitalization plan.

In a special meeting on Monday night, the council accepted the low bid of R.E. Grills Construction Company Inc. of Shannon, Ala., for the project which will include a round-about to handle traffic flow around the old county courthouse as well as sidewalk and street light improvements down Main Street.

Grills’ bid $1.8 million for the base project. The city did not accept options for an irrigation system or a one-year maintenance contract.

The only other bid meeting the city’s requirements was from Walker Patton Company Inc. of Birmingham. That bid came in at $1.9 million.

Grills’ $80,000 bid for the irrigation system and $14,000 for the maintenance contract

were not accepted. Walker Patton bid $35,000 for the irrigation

and $15,000 for the maintenance contract.

Voting in favor of the measure were Mayor Tom Seale and Councilmembers Ouida Mayfield, Sherry Rush and Leslie Whiting. Councilmembers Tim Billingsley and Scarlott Lowe were absent
