Locals dot All-Star baseball rosters

The top 36 upcoming senior prep baseball players in the state have been named to the North-South teams for the seventh annual Alabama All-Star Sports Week here July 14-19, according to an announcement by the Alabama High School Athletic Directors & Coaches Association.

Virtually all of the junior athletes selected will be signing college scholarships or entering the 2004 professional baseball draft during the next 12 months.

The two teams will open up the week’s all-star games on Monday, July 14, with a 4 p.m. doubleheader.

The Sports Week will feature in-state all-star games in volleyball, boys and girls basketball, football, baseball, softball and soccer.

The event will also include clinics and sessions for coaches, athletic directors, cheerleader coaches and officials.

Coaching the North all-star baseball team will be Mike O’Berry of Pelham, Brian Lindsey of Muscle Shoals, Alan Watkins of Austin and Vaughn Lee of Cleburne County.

The members of the North baseball team are:

Infielders: Davey Blackburn of Shades Valley, Brandon Lee of Cullman, Casey Nichols of Hackleburg, Thomas Nelson of Weaver, William Lichtner of Huntsville and Martin Warren of Austin.

Outfielders: Bear Burnett of Oak Mountain, Clay Whittemore of Cullman, and Clay Kizzire of Clay-Chalkville.

Pitchers: Shaun Sheehan of Pelham, Chris Law of Saks, Chris Wallace of Buckhorn, David Robertson of Central-Tuscaloosa, Wes Henderson of Oxford, Devin Burden of Colbert County, Ty Latham of Hewitt-Trussville, Brandon Flaherty of Clay-Chalkville and Jordan Conley of Muscle Shoals.

Catcher: Brint Hardy of Homewood and Desmond Fields of West End-Birmingham.

The Alabama High School Athletic Directors and Coaches Association operates under the auspices of the Alabama High School Athletic Association. Membership includes coaches of all AHSAA sports as well as administrators of member schools.

Also representing Shelby County in this week’s All-Star week in Montgomery will be Alonzo Barrett of Thompson (football); Micaela Crowley and Summer Ragsdale of Spain Park, Jennifer Whitley, Katherine Whitley and Elizabeth Theibert of Indian Springs, Megan Shine and Allison Whitworth of Briarwood, Catherine Spiker and Anne McIntyre of Oak Mountain (soccer); Geoff Walters of Shelby County (coach, football) and Hunter Gray of Indian Springs (soccer, coach)
