More than 26,000 future Alabama pro hockey fans can put their mice to rest.

After almost two months of online voting in a &uot;Name The Team Contest&uot; sponsored by WJOX 690, Alabama’s WHA2 franchise now has a name &045; the Alabama Slammers.

More than 12,700 voters picked the Slammers over the Freeze, which received nearly 11,300 votes. The nearest competitor to the two names was the Vulcans with slightly more than 1,800 votes.

&uot;We got a lot of feedback from area people voting,&uot; team president Taylor Hall said. &uot;I think we have a name and logo which will fit our team’s scenario well, and with that many votes it looks like there will be a lot of hockey fans around here.&uot;

The name and logo were unveiled at a press conference at 1 p.m. Tuesday afternoon at the Riverchase Galleria’s Grande Atrium.

The contest allowed fans to enter their suggestions for the team’s name. From more than 1,000 entries, the team narrowed the name selection to four finalists &045; the Slammers, Freeze, Vulcans and Hammers.

The winner of the &uot;Name The Team Contest&uot; will receive a free pair of season tickets for the team’s upcoming WHA2 season and an autographed team jersey.

In the event more than one person suggested the winning name Slammers, the person’s names will be placed into a drawing to determine a final winner.

The other finalists will receive a free pair of tickets to the team’s opening night game.

Affordable season ticket packages for the Alabama Slammers are currently on sale and start at just $67 per month. Deposits for season tickets are only $99 regardless of how many seats purchased.

The Slammers begin play in the WHA2 in October and will play all of their home games at the Pelham Civic Complex located next to the Oak Mountain Amphitheater.
