Pelham firefighters are teaming up with the Muscular Dystrophy Association for the annual Fill-the-Boot drive to fight neuromuscular disease.

Firefighters will be holding out their boots on Aug. 8-10 at Wal-Mart on Highway 31 to collect donations from the public.

Last year’s donations totaled $2,800, and this year, Battallion Chief Danny Endress is hoping to top that figure.

For 50 years, firefighters across the country have generously given their time and effort to help defeat muscle disease by raising funds for research.

Local MDA programs such as clinics at Children’s Hospital in Birmingham and the MDA summer camp, Camp ASCCA in Jackson’s Gap, Ala., benefit from the boot drive.

The firefighters will present the proceeds from their Boot Drive at the MDA Labor Day Telethon which will broadcast Aug. 31-Sept. 1
