A Calera volunteer dive rescue and recovery group with the help of Terry’s Towing, also of Calera, recently recovered two of five vehicles pulled thus far from a water-filled quarry in the Pea Ridge area.

Team member and Calera Police Sgt. Clint Barnett said the vehicles recovered on Tuesday, Aug. 19 included a three-wheel Honda and a 1997 Ford Escort, both of which were sank to depths between 48 and 50 feet.

Barnett said some of the vehicles located in the quarry pond are car thefts and what appear to be insurance fraud. He said five to six more vehicles remain in the quarry water.

&uot;It’s a pretty tough effort with the environment we’re in with spills and gas,&uot; said Barnett.

He said the volunteer dive group needs diffrent types of dry suits to work in such environments. And he pointed out that

the group is happy to take donations through the Calera Fire and Rescue Department.

Barnett said it was not known who owned the three-wheeler, but that the Ford Escort was recovered as an &uot;agency assist&uot; for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department.
