Terry Green returned an interception 90 yards for a touchdown as time expired in the first half to spark the Calera Eagles to a 21-20 win over region foe Billingsley last Friday night in Calera.

&uot;This game has to go down as one of the best I’ve ever been involved with,&uot; CHS head coach Ken Adams said. &uot;Our kids never quit. In the fourth quarter we had some of our starters tired and hurt and some of the back-ups came in and made some big plays.

&uot;I told our kids that good things are going to happen in every game and bad things will happen,&uot; Adams said. &uot;You have to overcome the bad and look for something good to happen. Terry returning that interception all the way for a score is an example of that.&uot;

Adams commended Tim Baker for blocking on the play, leading Green to the end zone.

Billingsley got on the board first behind one of the simplest plays in football &045; the quarterback sneak. The BHS quarterback gained several yards on that play during the first half.

&uot;We had to make adjustments at the half, and we shut that play down in the third and fourth quarters,&uot; Adams said.

BHS scored when Desmond Walton found pay dirt on a 25-yard run in the first quarter. Carl Pace added the 2-point conversion, giving the Bears an 8-0 lead early.

Calera answered when Green scored from 2 yards out. Jay Haynes connected with C.J. Pearson on the 2-point conversion to knot the game at 8-8.

The Bears took the lead again when Walton scored on a 2-yard run. The 2-point conversion failed, leaving BHS with a 14-8 lead.

Green’s interception return and Pearson’s PAT gave Calera a 15-14 lead at the half.

In the second half Walton put the Bears up again on a 7-yard touchdown run. The 2-point conversion failed, giving Billingsley a 20-15 lead.

Haynes put the Eagles up for good with 2 minutes left in the game. Haynes scored on a 3-yard run and set up the score with an important third down pass completion. The Eagles were penalized on first down and had two plays which resulted in losses. The Eagles were faced with a third and 15 when Haynes connected with Jake Garzarek on a completion good for a first down.

&uot;Jake was hit very hard on that play and held on to the ball,&uot; Adams said. &uot;That’s another example of our kids wanting a win badly.&uot;

Adams credited his defense with some key plays as well.

&uot;Twice they scored and went for two and our defense stopped them,&uot; Adams said. &uot;Our kids could have laid down and given up after the (Billingsley) scored, but they lined up and played 100 percent on the 2-point conversion play.&uot;

Haynes led the offense with 10 rushes for 80 yards and a touchdown and completed 5-of-5 passes for 76 yards. Green had 4 runs for 12 yards and a touchdown. Garzarek caught 2 passes for 24 yards and Pearson caught 2 passes for 62 yards. Mike Ellison finished the night with 2 catches for 45 yards.

The Eagles will return to the road this week, traveling to Marbury.

&uot;This is a huge game for us,&uot; Adams said. &uot;Marbury is 2-0 and 1-0 in the region. Basically, whoever wins this game will be at the top early in the region standings.&uot;
