One contest was an old-fashioned woodshed whipping and the other a nail-biter. But one thing was certain, last Friday night was football rivalry night in Shelby County.

Dewayne Kervin’s Shelby Academy Raiders downed Jim Stomps’ Coosa Valley Academy Rebels 47-0 in a game played on the Raiders’ home turf.

The surprise about this outcome was that this football game pitted two teams which played each other to the wire with a Hail Mary pass last year that helped the Raiders come out on top.

The regional battled began with a bang for the Raiders.

Tommy Childress blocked a CVA punt, which led to a 9-yard touchdown run for Ryan Elm.

The extra point by Colby Green was good.

Andrew Elm took the honors next on a 1-yard burst. And again, Green’s PAT was good.

But the Raiders were not done.

Ryan Elm would go on to score twice more on runs of 5 and 6 yards before the end of the half.

However, the Raiders failed to convert both extra point tries, and the score stood 26-0 at the half.

Raider fans didn’t have to wait long for another score as Andrew Elm went 72 yards for a score in the third quarter. The PAT was good, and the Raiders were up 33-0.

He would score again on a 4-yard run in the third quarter, and Barry Harrison would end the misery for CVA on a 28-yard in the final stanza. With Green’s PAT’s good, the final outcome was a 47-0 whitewash.

The Raiders made 19 first downs to three for CVA, gained 398 yards on the ground and one through the air for 399 yards of total offense to 15 yards rushing and 40 yards passing for CVA for a total of 55 yards.

Penalties were about even at 40 yards for the Raiders to 40.5 for the Rebels.

The Raiders punted one time to seven for the Rebels and turned the ball over one time to three for the visitors.

Shelby County vs. Chelsea

Geoff Walters’ Shelby County Wildcats provided the thrill of the night with a 19-14 comeback win over 4A, Region 5 rival Watt Parker’s Chelsea Hornets.

Chelsea scored first on a 25-yard Casey Morris run, but the PAT failed to lead 6-0 in the first quarter.

The Wildcats answered on a Marc Lemley 16-yard run. And with the PAT by Eric Hernandez, Shelby County pulled ahead 7-6 in the second quarter.

But Chelsea would score again before the end of the half on 1-yard burst by Morris

and a two-point conversion run by Grant Sullivan to go up 14-7.

But it was the Wildcats who found the endzone in the final two quarters, scoring on a 31-yard Lemley run in the third and a 4-yard Maurice Whiting in the fourth.

Two-point conversion passed failed on both touchdowns and the Wildcats came away with the 19-14 win.

Shelby County made 16 first downs to four for Chelsea.

The Wildcats rushed for 271 yards and passed for 14 yards for

285 yards total offense to 73 yards rushing and 84 yards passing for Chelsea for

157 total yards.

Shelby County fumbled five times, lost

two and suffered two interceptions for four turnovers while the Hornets fumbled twice and lost one.
