Commission awards monitor, meter bids

The Shelby County Commission awarded bids Monday night for computer monitors and automatic meter reading equipment.

Receiving the bids for monitors were JPK Micro Supply for the 17-inch VG 175 at $405 each; OM Office Supply for the 19-inch VX900 at $633 each and the 20-inch VX2000 at $1,100 each; PC Plus for the 21-inch CPD-G529 at $669 each; and Sai Computers for the 24-inch GDM FW900 at $1,686 each.

Others bidding for the monitors were E.C., Logistica, Shea PC, Hi-Tech, Lyons Computers, Howard Computers and Multiwave.

Hughes Supply was awarded the bid for the meter reading equipment at $13,335. Consolidated Pipe & Supply had the only other bid at $20,898.

In other business, the commission was introduced to five requests for alcoholic beverage licenses.

* Steve Barrentine requested a special retail license for the sale of liquor, wine or beer at Eagle Point Golf Club in north Shelby County.

* Michael Dennis requested an off premises retail beer license for Bart’s Country Store on Highway 10 in Montevallo.

* Carl Bryant requested a restaurant retail liquor license at Hannie B’s on Highway 46 in Shelby.

* Judy Dinda requested a license for the retail sale of alcolholic beverages at a package store/party supply store, Judy’s Outlet, on Highway 46 in Shelby.

* George Black requested a restaurant retail license for Okomo Restaurant on Highway 406 in Shelby.

County moves to aid unimproved roads

The Shelby County Highway Department is making strides to improve several roads across the county.

According to county engineer Randy Cole, acquiring the right-of-way is a first step.

He said some residents donated right of way, while others sold it to the county.

Higgins Road donations came from Elner Mae and Billy Ray Glass, Johnnie and Betty Higgins, Evaughn Horton (Gould), Lee and Catherine Ray, Karen Schrader and James and Bonnie Schrader.

Land had to be purchased on Higgins Road from Brian and Ruth Gordon.

Ivy Way donations came from Alex and Brenda Bailey, William and Sonya Emanuel, James and Nina Key and James Jr. and Kathy Key.

Right of way for Ivy Way had to be purchased from Wanda Faye Manzella (Jones) and Dale and Esther New.

Donations for Strawberry Road came from Gulf States Paper Corporation and Annette Skinner.

&uot;I’d like to commend all the citizens who donated right-of-way,&uot; commissioner Larry Dillard said. &uot;It makes it so much easier for us to make improvements.&uot;

In other business, the commission re-appointed Gary Waters and Mark Bray to the Shelby County 911 Board of Directors.

Waters represents the Fire Chief’s Association, and Bray represents EMS
