Congressman Spencer Bachus has accepted the challenge of the Court Appointed Special Advocates to be the brunt of the jokes at the organization’s fifth annual roast.

&uot;To be roasted is one thing, but cremated another.

Who knows how the evening will end?&uot; said Corley Ellis, president of the CASA board of directors.

This annual &uot;Who’s Who of Shelby County&uot; is set for Thursday, Nov. 6 at the Pelham Civic Complex.

The evening will begin with a silent auction at 6 p.m. followed by dinner at 6:30 p.m. with the traditional roast to follow.

Congressman Bachus is sure to be joined by many of his former legislative colleagues and fellow attorneys.

Gov. Bob Riley has been invited to attend as have many of his friends.

The annual roast is the largest fundraiser held by CASA, a program of volunteers who go through the juvenile court process with children.

Shelby County Rep. Mike Hill, Pelham Mayor Bobby Hayes, Probate Judge Patricia Fuhrmeister, former sheriff James Jones, county attorney and former Shelby County Sen. Butch Ellis and County Commissioner Lindsey Allison, all past honorees of the annual roast, will be on hand to enjoy the flames from the other side of the fire.

But rest assured they will all be feeding the flames vicariously through others who will be doing the roasting.

Those roasting Congressman Bachus are being kept under wraps until the evening of the event.

However, it is worth mentioning that Gov. Riley has been invited to fill one of those slots.

Master of Ceremonies will be long-time CASA enthusiast and State Auditor Beth Chapman who created and has organized this event for the past five years.

Among the silent auction items available will be weekend getaways to Destin Beachfront Condominiums, a beautiful oil still life from Griffith Art Gallery, various dining packages, a pair of Mont Blanc pens from Barton-Clay Fine Jewelers, golf outings, dinner for two at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, family fun packages and much more.

CASA is a nonprofit organization which recruits and trains volunteers to go through the court process with abused and neglected children.

CASAs serve as a child’s &uot;voice&uot; in court.

CASA is constantly looking for volunteers to assist in their efforts to help these children who may not otherwise receive help.
