The Chelsea Hornets rushed for nearly 300 yards and held the Montevallo offense in check Friday night to defeat their region rivals 33-12.

&uot;This was a big win to get us off of a two-game slide,&uot; said Chelsea head coach Watt Parker.

The Hornets (4-2) fell to Shelby County and 6A Pelham the two previous weeks but bounced back strong against Montevallo.

Chelsea ran the ball 46 times in the contest. Hornets running back Grant Sullivan had 17 carries for 136 yards and two touchdowns.

&uot;Sullivan, Daniel Dempsey and Casey Morris all ran the ball hard,&uot; Parker said.

Dempsey and Morris combined for 111 yards on 21 carries.

But Montevallo was the first to score after Chelsea went three and out on its first possession, on a 13-yard run by A.J. Ward.

The Hornets answered the call in the second quarter when Sullivan picked up his first score of the night.

Chelsea put up 21 points in the second quarter to take a 15-point halftime lead.

The Hornets added a field goal and a safety in the third quarter before both teams scored touchdowns in the fourth.

Ward finished the night with 111 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown for Montevallo.

Chelsea’s Andrew Lafferty had 15 tackles.

&uot;Andrew Lafferty had another outstanding game on defense,&uot; Parker said.
