The Cornerstone Chargers are a running team. The physical style of football is the best fit for the players at Cornerstone, according to head coach Tim Smith.

&uot;If our bigguns can beat your bigguns then we’re going to win,&uot; Smith said.

Cornerstone’s bigguns won Friday night, and so did the Chargers.

CCS racked up 338 yards of total offense &045; without ever attempting a pass play &045; to defeat Taylor Road 42-7.

&uot;Our line played exceptionally well,&uot; Smith said.

The pounding ground attack was led by running back Jeremy Walden who had 91 yards and ? touchdown.

Cornerstone lined up several times in a formation that at first confused many fans and seemed to baffle the Taylor Road defense.

Smith installed a &uot;shotgun&uot; variation of the Double Wing offense in which two players lined up side-by-side behind center. Not knowing which player would receive the ball kept the defense guessing, Smith said.

&uot;It looks like two quarterbacks lining up and you never know who is going to get the snap.&uot;

The Chargers remaining opponents will likely see more of the formation, Smith said, as the team will continue to practice running more plays out of the set.

After not scoring a touchdown for two weeks, Cornerstone had six different players run for touchdowns in the contest.

Heath Smith had 4 carries for 28 yards and a touchdown and Matt kennedy had a 44-yard sprint for a score.

Casey Crumpton, Casey Perryman and Carl Martin also had rushing touchdowns.

But the offense wasn’t the only phase of the game that Cornerstone dominated, the Charger defense held Taylor Road to just 3 first downs and completely took away the running game.

Ben Lee and Wesley Crissle had big nights at defensive end to shut down the Taylor Road offense.

The homecoming victory was an important one for the Chargers not just for sentimental reasons. With a 1-2 record in region play, the team could win the remainder of its games and make the playoffs
