The Briarwood Christian Lions set some big goals at the beginning of the season &045; to win every football game and to compete for the state championship.

The first goal was dashed when BCS fell to Vestavia Hills in the season opener, but the second is alive and well thanks to an important region win over McAdory last Friday night.

Coach Fred Yancey’s Lions (5-1 overall) are undefeated in region play with region matchups against Jackson-Olin and Homewood remaining on the schedule.

After knocking off McAdory, the Lions are in a good position to win their 12th straight region championship.

Quarterback Joe Craddock accounted for 4 touchdowns &045; 2 running and 2 passing &045; as Briarwood won 35-7.

&uot;He’s a great player,&uot; Yancey said of Craddock. &uot;He runs the ball well, throws the ball well and better than that, he’s been a strong leader for this football team.&uot;

Craddock was 12-of-23 passing for 162 yards and he also rushed for 53 yards in the game.

Simeon Castille, the standout defensive back who has been used more prominently as a tailback in recent weeks, had 44 yards on the ground.

&uot;We didn’t play (Castille) on offense last year,&uot; Yancey said. &uot;Now we move him over when we need his wheels to run for us at receiver or tailback.&uot;

The Lions had big defensive efforts from John Hall and Andy Davis. Hall had 12 solo tackles and a blocked punt while Davis had 19 tackles (7 solo, 12 assists).
