The Shelby County Wildcats scored on a last-minute drive to beat Childersburg on the road last Friday night, clinching their second straight Class 4A, Region 5 title.

Running back Derek Harris scored on a 2-yard run with 19 seconds remaining in the game to help Shelby County win 13-9.

But most of the Wildcats offense came through the air as quarterback Dane Vansant found receivers Brandon Burns, Rico Crumpton and Drew Holsomback for 125 yards.

Vansant completed eight of his 17 attempts including a 41-yard touchdown strike to Burns.

&uot;In the past few weeks, we’ve thrown the ball more and taken some pressure off our running backs,&uot; Shelby County head coach Geoff Walters said.

With the victory, the Wildcats improve to 6-0 in region play and 7-1 overall.

Even though the next two games will have no bearing on the Wildcats’ postseason schedule, Shelby County players won’t have any chances to relax, Walters said.

Although he is proud of his team for its accomplishments, Walters said he is not happy with his team’s performance

in the win.

&uot;We made far too many mistakes,&uot; Walters said. &uot;We are going to pound them pretty good this week in practice.&uot;

The Wildcats were penalized 10 times for 88 yards against Childersburg.

Shelby County will face cross-county rival Montevallo next week in their final region game of the season.

Walters said the Bulldogs have a history of playing Shelby County tough.

&uot;Nothing could make their season any better than to come in here and knock us off,&uot; he said.

Walters said his Wildcats don’t plan on resting on their accomplishments in region play.

&uot;The good thing about this team is that they have a vision,&uot; Walters said. &uot;Their vision is to go to Legion Field. Of course one of their goals was to win the region, but they want to go beyond that.&uot;
