Good defense and a controlled offense won the game for the Thompson Warriors last Friday.

With the win, the 5A Warriors finished the 2003 season with five wins and five losses.

The 6A Oak Mountain Eagles finished their season with four wins, six losses.

&uot;Lack of numbers cost us (this year),&uot; said OMHS head football coach Toney Pugh. &uot;We only dressed out 12 seniors. The teams we competed against &045; Homewood, Pelham had a lot more than that.&uot;

Pugh said he and the other coaches at Oak Mountain were proud of the job done by the 12 seniors and other team leaders; but &uot;12 is just not good enough to win at this level.&uot;

Thompson head coach Ricky Seale said his team played well against Oak Mountain, winning 17-3.

&uot;We were able to control the ball,&uot; he said. &uot;We had the ball 71 plays to their 32 plays. Our defense did a good job of getting after them and controlling the line of scrimmage.&uot;

THS scored in the first quarter on a 56-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Tony Myers to senior Eric Bogan. Junior Eric Hawk scored the point-after touchdown to make the score 7-0.

Later in the quarter, Hawk scored 3 more points on a field goal to make the score 10-0.

In the second quarter, OMHS senior Nick Thomas scored a field goal from the 27-yard line to bring the score to 10-3 Thompson.

The third quarter featured a 21-play drive by the THS offense which did not amount to a score but managed to keep Oak Mountain off the field the entire quarter.

The Warriors failed to score in the quarter but came back in the fourth with a three-yard touchdown run from sophomore Chris Myles. The extra point attempt by Hawk was good and the scoring ended at 17-0.

Coach Seale said he was especially proud of Bogan.

&uot;Eric Bogan had more than 1,000 yards rushing for the season, and our offensive line did a good job to help him get his yardage,&uot; he said.

Bogan led the Warriors with 127 yards rushing on 23 attempts. He also had two receptions for 68 yards.

Myers had 83 yards rushing on 15 attempts, and junior Jeffrey Adams had 56 yards rushing on 14 attempts.

Senior Matt Lofthus was credited with three receptions for 19 yards; and junior Michael Hall had two for 11 yards. Thompson had 21 first downs to Oak Mountain’s seven. The Warriors had 54 rushing attempts for 283 yards to OMHS’ 13 attempts for 18 yards. On passing, THS had 104 yards to the Eagles’ 54 yards.

Both teams had a turnover. The Warriors had 12 penalties for 103 yards, and the Eagles had three for 35 yards.

Both Thompson and Oak Mountain’s seasons ended Friday
