The city of Alabaster approved the rezoning of two parcels of land to community business at its meeting on Monday.

Following public hearings in which no one spoke for or against the requests, the council approved a rezoning for just more than two acres at 1693 Old Highway 31 from MR (Municipal Reserve) to B-3 (Community Business) and a

rezoning for

almost an acre near 120 Eighth Ave. N.W. from M-1 (light industry) to B-3 (Community Business).

The council also unanimously approved a transfer application for a retail table wine (off premises only) and retail beer (off premises only) license for BP 119 at 8079 Highway 119.

However, the council denied a lounge retail liquor Class II (package) application for the same location. A motion by Councilmember Michael Sherwood to approve the application died for lack of a second. The council next voted 6-1 with Sherwood voting &uot;no&uot; to deny the application.

Councilmember Tommy Ryals who made the motion to deny the application said the BP 119 location is in his ward and a package store was not something he would expect to be located in the area. Instead he said that is something he would expect in a more commercial area.

Councilmember Henry Hines pointed out that a daycare center was also located nearby.

The council set two public hearings for Dec. 1 on an annexation request for more than 169 acres off Highway 17 next to Creekview Elementary and an annexation request for more than 31 acres off First Avenue West/County 44.

The council also set a public hearing for Dec. 15 for an ordinance regarding Alabaster becoming a Tree City.

In other matters, the council:

* Approved an increase by $1,000 to the Fire Department supply budget to make use of a $1,000 donation by Wal-mart.

* Approved an expense of $11,500 to repave and stripe Highway 95.

* Approved a resolution allowing Mayor David Frings to enter into a contract regarding Sports Complex II on Highway 119.

* Approved a street light request to install and maintain five lights on Big Oaks Drive in the Windy Oaks subdivision.

* Approved a bid of $14,992 from Cahaba Tractor

for a Kubota M4900 tractor for the Field & Land Maintenance Department.

* Reported that the Christmas Parade will be Dec. 6 at 10 a.m.

*Heard an announcement from Frings that the first Senior Prom for senior citizens will be held at Thompson Middle School on Dec. 13 from 6-8:30 p.m. with entertainment by the Bill Turner Band, food and door prizes. Anyone interested should contact Lori Conklin at Alabaster City Hall.

*Heard a report from Coleman White on the School Resource Program in which police officers are placed in Alabaster schools
