Lady Bulldogs rebound with win over Vincent

Coming off three straight losses and a 10-day layoff, the Montevallo High School Lady Bulldogs were eager to get back to work in Susie DeMent gymnasium last Friday night.

Coach Tena Niven’s squad took advantage of the return to the court, knocking off the Vincent Lady Yellow Jackets 51-29 to improve to 2-3 on the year.

Kinyatta Hayes scored 10 of her game-high 12 points in the first quarter, leading MHS to a 14-3 lead after the opening eight minutes of play.

After Hayes and several other starters got into early foul trouble, the Lady ‘Dawgs went to the bench, getting 18 points from reserves en route to the victory.

Samantha Spradlin and Shanteeka Reed combined for nine of Montevallo’s 16 second-quarter points, as the MHS lead stretched to 30-13 by halftime.

Haley Dennis scored all six of her points in the second half, as eight of the Lady Bulldogs’ 10 players scored in the third and fourth quarters, getting a pair of three-point baskets from Reed and Ashley Ebrahimi.

Vincent battled MHS the entire game but could not overcome 41 turnovers, as Valisha Cartwell registered five steals while Ebrahimi and Reed added four apiece. Telea Naugher led all players with 11 rebounds and Spradlin cleared nine boards.

Montevallo is slated for two key area games this week, hosting Dallas County on Tuesday before traveling to Bibb County on Friday.

Pelham girls fall to Spain Park, beat Thompson

Pelham’s girls basketball team fell to Spain Park last Thursday 58-46. Jennifer Weems scored 23 points with 12 rebounds and 6 steals for the Panthers.

On Saturday, Pelham pulled out a 57-52 win against Thompson.

The Panthers were led by Dekita Johnson with 17 points and 5 steals; Weems with 14 points, 4 steals and 6 rebounds; Carla Jennings with 11 points and 5 rebounds; and Amanda Farrell, who pulled down 15 rebounds.

Pelham coach Kim Kiel said she is proud of her team’s efforts so far this season.

&uot;The thing I am most excited about is that we played as a team,&uot; she said. &uot;Each player, whether they were on the floor or on the bench, showed such support for each other. These young ladies play their heart out each game and I am proud to coach them.&uot;

Thompson girls start season 5-3

Coach Cara Crosslin’s Lady Warriors beat Chelsea 66-24 last Friday behind 15 points from Tamara Williams.

Amber Crabb scored 10 points and Haley Barnett drained three three-point shots while scoring 11. Katie Johnson scored 8 for Thompson.

Charlie Bowman scored 9 points and Melissa Beard scored 7 for the Hornets.

The Lady Warriors fell to 5-3 with their Saturday loss to Pelham.

Williams had 12 points in the loss while Amber Crabb and Tanesha McNeal each scored 8 points
