Rumors were circulating recently that a hazing incident had occurred at the University of Montevallo, but Dr. Robert McChesney, UM president, said it was simply an incident of &uot;fisticuffs.&uot;

McChesney said that idea of hazing arose from the fact two young men who got into a fight were from the same fraternity.

One was a pledge and one was a member, he said.

He said one of the young men was sent to the hospital for a short stay.

&uot;We don’t know what the cause was. We will hold a judicial hearing on the matter. Once complete, we will know the facts,&uot; he said of the fight at Napier Hall.

McChesney said a judicial hearing will be conducted by faculty, staff and students.

&uot;Our approach is we want to handle it on campus … if we can.&uot;

He said the university is not interested in punishing kids, &uot;but educating them on how to appropriately get along in society.&uot;
