Thompson High School took a 16-6 record into the second day of the Gulf Shores Spring Fling tournament yesterday, behind pitcher Sarah Wilson who earned the win in each of her last four starts.

Coach Cara Crosslin’s Lady Warriors picked up wins against Baldwin County and Colbert County before falling to Huntsville in pool play Monday.

Wilson pitched a complete game as THS defeated Baldwin County, 4-2.

Miranda Bryan notched her third win of the season in a 3-1 victory over Colbert County.

The Lady Warriors then lost to Huntsville 2-1, despite a strong outing by Stephanie Piggott, who did not give up an earned run in the loss.

Thompson was scheduled to play in three more pool games yesterday before entering the single-elimination bracket. Results were not available at presstime.

Some 45 teams participated in the spring break tournament held along the

Alabama Gulf coast in Gulf Shores, Orange Beach and Foley.

Before making the trip south, Thompson traveled just down Highway 31 to play in the Panther Classic in Pelham last weekend.

The Lady Warriors defeated Gardendale 5-2 as Piggott earned the win in relief and infielder Katie McGuire went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Wilson threw a complete game one-hitter as Thompson shutout Hillcrest, 6-0. Haley Houston went 2-for-3 and McGuire went 2-for-2 for the Lady Warriors.

Piggott pitched the entire game for Thompson allowing only five hits in a 3-0 win to help THS earn its second straight shutout in tournament play against Alexandria. Piggott got support at the plate from Bryan and Ashley Blankenship who each went 1-for-2 at the plate.

The Lady Warriors fell to eventual tournament-champion John Carroll Catholic in the semifinal game. Bryan went 1-for-3 with one RBI in the loss. Blankenship, who was named to the all-tournament team for Thompson, went 1-for-3.

&uot;We learn more from a loss than we do a win,&uot; said THS assistant Marissa Foster after the loss to John Carroll. &uot;One thing that we should have learned from this tournament is that we do need more experience together as a team.

&uot;You have to make the routine plays, the small things are what ended up coming back to haunt us in the last game,&uot; Foster said.

Through 22 games the Lady Warriors are led in pitching by Piggott and Wilson, who each carry ERAs under 1.00.

Piggott (7-4) has more than 50 strikeouts and four shutouts for Thompson while Wilson (6-2) has thrown three shutouts.

Foster said the team still has room for improvement but is playing well so far this year.

&uot;I’m looking forward to the goals we have set for the rest of the season,&uot; she said.

After returning from spring break the Lady Warriors will face Wetumpka on the road
