The state Department of Transportation will close the Sgt. Robert Farrington Bridge on Highway 119 in Montevallo in about two weeks, and school buses will be rerouted, according to City Clerk Steve Gibbs.

Gibbs made the announcement during Monday night’s failed attempt to hold a council meeting due to lack of a quorum.

Absent were Mayor Grady Parker and Councilmembers Paul Brown and Bob Lightfoot. Present were Sharon Anderson, Willie Goldsmith and Greg Pendleton.

Gibbs said the bridge will be closed for replacement for about 10 months and school buses for the middle and elementary schools will be rerouted across Middle Street to Highway 25.

Fire Chief Bill Reid also announced that the city is not issuing burn permits and asked that no one burn in the city of Montevallo or the county due to dry conditions.

While no action could be taken, it was reported that Jim Hunt has been nominated to replace Eddie Lawley on Park and Recreation Board No. 2.

Also noted were board terms which ended as follows, Claude Elledge on the Water Board ended Feb. 10, vote pending; Don Clayton on the Board of Adjustments ended March 11; Herman Peoples on the Board of Adjustments ended March 11; and Mike Harmon on the Board of Adjustments ended March 11.

Police Chief Steve Southerland told council members he would take care of the parade for the opening of baseball season.

The council could not take action on a Department of Transportation agreement for infrastructure funds in the amount of $28,539.46, senior programming expansion, a park board request for campers to paint a mural, the annexation of the Chappell property, the extension of zoning for 2.6 acres on the Dinsmore property or the payment of bills
