Afternoon thunderstorms were severe enough to end Pelham’s match with Homewood Monday, but they weren’t enough to keep the Panthers from claiming their seventh win of the season.

Pelham (7-0) is off to an undefeated start thanks in part to some junior leadership &045; the team doesn’t have a senior on the roster &045; and a laid back approach by head coach Bob Parker.

&uot;We’re hoping to make a little noise this year,&uot; Parker said. &uot;Teamwise, if we play as good as our potential we have an outside chance to compete (in the sectional and state tournaments).&uot;

Pelham is led by junior Kyle Gray, who was the low-scorer in Monday’s win against Homewood.

Gray played with the first group, who was able to complete six holes before lightning ended their play at Inverness Country Club.

&uot;Kyle is a good leader for us,&uot; Parker said. &uot;He likes being that lead dog &045; to go out there and lead them.&uot;

Gray is averaging a score between 36 and 37 for nine holes so far this season and shot a 77 in a full round at the Shades Valley Invitational earlier this year.

&uot;Kyle understands his game,&uot; Parker said. &uot;You’ve got a lot of guys who think they have to overpower it. He plays real smart golf.&uot;

Gray is joined on the Pelham roster by juniors Jacob Huffstutler, Cory Fox, Daniel Windle and Pat Campisi.

Sophomores Tyler Sample and Sammy Langford also contribute along with freshman Whit Winford and Patrick Burk.

Burk has played a key role for the team, Parker said, because of his participation in summer tournaments and his off-season work on the golf course.

Pelham faces Thompson April 1 and has three more matches before the April 12 area tournament
