Winfred Jones might not have said much, but he managed to do a lot during his 82 years.

The Calera City Councilman died April 7 from a long illness.

He is remembered mostly for his public service rather than passionate monologues pitched from the council bench. Jones didn’t do much of that.

In addition to completing almost 16 years as a Calera city councilmember, he also served during World War II and the Korean War, earning the Purple Heart, among others.

Jones loved deep-sea fishing and spending time with his family.

He left behind three daughters and two sons, having been preceded in death by one son.

His daughter, Connie Jones, said her father was a community leader as well as a man who united the family. Jones’ home was a focal point, she said.

&uot;I will always remember dad as a person that always wanted us to be together. His place was a gathering place for the holidays,&uot; she said.

Jones attended First Baptist Missionary Church in Calera and worked closely with members of the community during his four terms as the District

Two representative on Calera City Council.

One of his crowning achievements during his tenure included extending the city’s sewage system to Pineville in north Calera. He also served on the Calera Planning and Zoning Board.

Calera Mayor George Roy said Jones left the city a better place.

&uot;Winfred was one of those types that didn’t do a lot of talking. He was very dedicated to his job,&uot; Roy said. &uot;His death is a big loss not only to his family, but to the city.&uot;

The Calera City Council has not met since Jones’ death. Roy said he was unsure whether it would name a replacement or leave the District Two seat on Calera City Council vacant until the city election in August.
