The Columbiana Housing Authority and residents of the Mountain View Apartment Complex, Police Officer William Nick Kirkland and the Shelby County Commission were recognized at a recent meeting of the Columbiana City Council.

Police Chief Michael Lann recognized

Jack Mundy of the Columbiana Housing Authority

and the adults of the Mountain View Apartment Complex with the Columbiana Police Department’s Brother’s Keeper Award for coming up with their own after-school program.

Lann said the program was developed to help youngsters with homework and to provide them activities to keep them off the streets and away from drugs.

Lann also recognized Officer Kirkland with the Police Department’s Meritorious Service Award for his conduct, integrity and character as a member of the Columbiana Police Force.

County Commissioner Billy Thompson presented a check for some $20,067.50 from the county to reimburse the city for some of the work done at the Girls Softball Complex.

Mayor Allan Lowe proclaimed May 2-8 Municipal Clerk’s Week.

In other action, the council:

* Approved a payment of $2,800 to Donny Willis for work at the Girls Softball Field.

* Approved a payment of $2,000 to R. E. Grills for downtown street stripping.

* Approved expenses for the Police Department in the amount of $1,494 for a patrol car light bar, use of the city credit card to purchase ink cartridges for a Police Department

printer and use of the credit card for Officer Lamar Vick to attend the Police Chief’s Conference.

* Approved transfers from the General Fund to the Library Operating Account in the amount of some $1,077, from the General Fund to Ball Park

Construction in the amount of some $6,627; and a transfer to the Bond Disbursement Account in the amount of $2,000.

* Approved the employment of T.J. Partridge as temporary summer help.

* Accepted the resignation of

Robert Odgers and recognized him for his services to the Park and Recreation Board.

* A work session was scheduled for May 10 but was later canceled
