Following last month’s track and field state championships, several Shelby County high schools walked away with strong finishes and a few individuals left as state champions.

At the 1A-3A state championships, held at Troy State University, Calera High School finished third overall, while Vincent High School finished fifth in the 2A division.

Calera finished the meet with three state champions: Glynn Dowdell in the men’s triple jump, Tim Baker in the men’s shot put and Manny Goday in the men’s discuss throw.

Dowdell set the mark for the field with his 13.2-meter jump, while Baker’s shot put throw of 14.3 meters and Goday’s discus throw of 40.75 meters also earned championships.

Also finishing strong in the triple jump was Vincent’s James Odems, who took third with a 12.34-meter jump.

In the discus throw, Calera’s Nick Ray finished third with a throw of 40.05 meters.

While no Shelby County runners won the long jump, Dowdell finished as runner-up, Vincent’s Darnell Kelley placed fourth and Calera’s Kevin Watkins and Wendell Demoss finished fifth and seventh respectively.

In the men’s 100-meter dash, Calera’s Wayne Burns finished eighth while Watkins finished seventh.

Vincent’s Kelley had the strongest showing in the 100-meter, finishing fifth overall.

Kelley also placed in the men’s 200-meter, finishing sixth.

Calera’s Demoss finished fifth.

In the men’s 400-meter, another pair of Vincent runners finished strong as the other Kelley, Derrione Kelley, placed fifth and Odems finished seventh.

Covering the long distances, Vincent’s Jeff Jantz finished a strong sixth in both the men’s 1600-meter and 3200-meter dash.

In hurdles action, Vincent’s Tracey Clancy finished fourth in the men’s 110-meter while finishing seventh in the 300-meters.

Another Vincent hurdler, Josh Wallace, qualified and finished sixth in the men’s 110-meters.

Across the state, the 4A-6A state championships were held at the new Paul W. Bryant High School in Tuscaloosa.

In 4A women’s action, Shelby County High School’s Randi Reeves finished eighth in the 100-meter dash while also finishing 13th in the long jump.

The Briarwood Lions had a strong showing in 5A action, finishing 15th overall.

Briarwood’s Wilson Whitaker finished seventh in the men’s 800-meter while finishing eighth in the 1600-meters.

The men’s team also had a couple of fourth place finishers, with the team coming in fourth in the 4 x 800-meter relay and John Scruggs finishing the same in the pole vault competition.

The Briarwood women were also represented at the championships.

Bailey Jones was the highest finisher from the women’s team, finishing sixth in the long jump.

The competition in 6A also featured three state champions.

Pelham’s Montez Billings captured the men’s state championship in the 200-meter dash, Spain Park’s Patrick Wells in the pole vault with a vault of 14-feet-9-inches and Oak Mountain’s Norman Austin set a new Alabama state record in the javelin with a throw of 174-feet-11-inches.

Wells’ Jaguar teammate, Chris Spear, finished as the runner-up in the pole vault, while the Oak Mountain pair of Zac Epperson and Dan Brislin finished eighth and ninth respectively.

Finishing behind Austin in the javelin throw, Pelham’s Daniel Bell came in second, also breaking the old state record, while Spain Park’s Steve Ecker finished in third.

The men’s track events featured several Oak Mountain runners.

James Hope finished fourth in the 200-meter while Nick Lambert finished fifth in both the 400-meter 800-meter and eighth in the 300-meter hurdles.

In the 1600-meter, Jason McMillan, of Pelham, finished fifth just as his teammate David Clyburn did in the high jump.

Spain Park’s Adam Mims also finished fifth in the triple jump.

Mims’ teammate, Ryan Bell, finished ninth in the shot put throw and sixth in the discus throw.

In 6A women’s action, Spain Park had a strong showing, finishing seventh overall and Oak Mountain finished 16th.

Spain Park’s Brittany Wood had a pair of top five finishes, finishing fifth in the 3,200-meter and third in the 1,600-meter dash.

Teammate Rebekah Smith finished eighth in the 800-meter dash.

Oak Mountain’s Sarah Bond finished fourth in the 300-meter hurdles while Spain Park’s Ashley Scales wound up sixth.

In the high jump, Oak Mountain’s Hannah Farmer finished sixth and Spain Park’s Lydia Jost finished eighth.

Jost’s teammate Brittany Wilk notched a top five finish for the Jaguars in the triple jump, finishing fifth.

The pole vault, shot put and discus throw competitions featured a host from Spain Park.

Oak Mountain’s lone finisher, Mary Grace DeCastra, topped the list of Shelby County finishers in the pole vault, with Spain Park’s Jost, Deanna Basden and Kelly Harrington finishing in seventh, eighth and 11th.

The women’s shot put featured a pair of Spain Park Jaguars as Andrea Lewis finished in sixth and Brittany Jefferies in seventh.

Jefferies also placed in the discus throw, finishing eighth overall
