The town council of Harpersville had a busy night Monday.

The town council agreed to

honor former President Ronald Reagan, voting unanimously to place a wreath in his honor on Friday. That is the day the former president, who died at the age of 93, will be laid to rest at his presidential library in Simi Valley, Calif.

The wreath for Reagan will be placed in the grassy area on U.S. Highway 280 near Holcombe Home Center.

In other matters, the council set qualifying fees for upcoming municipal elections, increased the number of court days per month to two, agreed to seek legal opinions on splitting the cost of expenses from labor for ballfield maintenance as well as the pay of the incoming mayor.

The council set qualifying fees for Harpersville municipal elections at $25, which represents no change from previous elections. But the council will seek a legal opinion to clarify the pay of the incoming mayor.

The council agreed to seek an opinion to determine if the pay for the incoming mayor of $300 per month and half the cost of insurance at $305.50 will also include a $25 per meeting fee as a member of the Town Council.

City clerk Joyce Robertson said previously the mayor’s position was paid $300 per month, the full cost of insurance at $611 and the $25 per meeting pay.

The council voted to increase the number of court days to twice per month which will represent an increase in cost to the city of $1,350 per month.
