From Staff Reports

Representatives from the Bruno’s Memorial Classic recently announced dates for next year’s golf tournament, moving the event from the traditional last week in April to mid-May.

The PGA Champions Tour event will be held May 16-22 at Greystone Golf and Country Club.

Organizers said that several factors influenced the switch, among them the spring NASCAR race at Talladega Superspeedway.

Earlier this year, it was announced that the Talladega Aaron’s Dream Weekend races would be held April 29-May 1, which has historically been the weekend of the Bruno’s Memorial Classic.

&uot;There were many factors that went into our decision to move the Bruno’s Memorial Classic to the week of May 16-22. You have Talladega, Mother’s Day and conditioning of the golf course that weighed into the decision,&uot; said Tournament Director John Marovich.

Mother’s Day falls on May 8 next year.

&uot;These dates will provide the best opportunity for success for all the events in the greater Birmingham area,&uot; Marovich said. &uot;We look forward to another successful event in 2005.&uot;

In its 13-year history, the Bruno’s Memorial Classic has raised nearly $8 million for Alabama charities.

The tournament has also had 13 different winners during that time.

Bruce Fleisher shot a 4-under-par 68 to close his final round of play, winning this year’s tournament by 7 strokes, the largest margin ever recorded at the Bruno’s. Fleisher finished with a three-round score of 64-68-68-200.

The win earned Fleisher a check for $225,000, the top prize of a $1.5 million purse.

The Fourteenth Annual Bruno’s Memorial Classic will be held at the Greystone Golf and Country Club, May 16-22, 2005.
