There’s no need for alarm, but Alabaster police said they will arrest anyone who may have shot a dog in a fenced-in backyard two weeks ago.

Capt. Curtis Rigney of the Alabaster Police Department said on Tuesday that his department received an information-only report two weeks ago.

The report indicated that a man’s dog was shot in the hind leg while inside of his fenced-in backyard.

The man took his dog to a vet, who may or may not have verified that the dog was shot, according to the report.

Despite some media reports, Rigney said his department has received only one report of such animal cruelty this year. He said there were no witnesses to the incident, and that his department would arrest and file charges against anyone involved in shooting or otherwise harming dogs.

&uot;We would pursue this,&uot; Rigney said. &uot;We don’t have a lot of this. There’s certainly been no rash of it.&uot;

The incident occurred in the Port South neighborhood of Alabaster on Tradewinds Circle. Calls to the man’s home were unsuccessful.

Media reports indicated the man had posted fliers seeking information about the incident, and that he was offering a reward
