Pelham’s Michael Adams is cashing in on his recent success on the basketball court.

No, the high school senior hasn’t made any money from his play, but his on-court performance has earned him a trip to Las Vegas, where he will compete with a traveling team sponsored by the Birmingham Police Department.

&uot;We expect Mike to be one of our leaders going into Las Vegas,&uot; said Curtis Oden, coach of the Birmingham Police Athletic Team.

&uot;There will be more than 150 teams from all over the nation compteting there.&uot;

Adams is scheduled to leave for Las Vegas on Monday, just more than a week after a strong performance in the AHSAA All-Star Sports Week in Montgomery.

He scored 10 points and had nine rebounds in the North-South All-Star basketball game, featuring some of the top high school talent in the state.

He was also the only North player to net more than 20 minutes on the floor.

Adams was one of two players to represent Shelby County in the game. He was joined on the North squad by Calera’s George Drake.

Drake scored 12 points and earned MVP honors for the North team.

Pelham basketball coach Owen Butts said Adams will benefit from his play at the All-Star game.

&uot;I thought he played really well,&uot; Butts said. &uot;It’s a good experience for him.&uot;

Butts said he was proud to see Adams get the opportunity, noting his star player is just as impressive off the court as on it.

&uot;I think he’s a great kid – number one,&uot; Butts said of Adams.

The game was held at Auburn University at Montgomery, a much larger venue than the high school gymnasiums where Adams is used to performing.

&uot;It was, by far, the biggest crowd I’ve ever played in front of,&uot; Adams said. &uot;Big crowds like that obviously make you want to play harder.&uot;

In addition to his status as a top basketball prospect, Adams has also garnered attention as a defensive end on Pelham’s football team.
