Harpersville Mayor Wayne Moore and Councilmember Terry White will interview applicants for the position of fire chief this Thursday at 6 p.m.

The council voted to approve the two to conduct the interviews at its regular Monday night council meeting.

Moore announced that acting Fire Chief Max Roper has resigned that position and that the city has received six resumes.

According to Councilmember Theoangelo Perkins, the fire department is volunteer and the position of fire chief is unpaid.

However, he said, there are three or four paid positions which are rotated among firefighters to make sure the

department is adequately staffed.

In other business, Mayor Moore pointed out that it is illegal in Harpersville for political signs to be placed on lampposts, utility poles, public structures or shade trees. He said an ordinance to that effect was passed in 1983.

Raymond Carter, a candidate for mayor, said 125 of his signs have been pulled up and that he will prosecute the offender at a later date. He told current councilmembers his political signs will be removed from utility poles.

In other election-related matters, the council approved poll workers, the use of electronic voting machines and Town Clerk Joyce Robertson as election official.

With Councilmember Shirley Middleton abstaining, the council voted to spend $26,700 with Summit Electric to repair lights at the softball field.

Middleton said she did not see much use of the field.

She also said while it has been four years since the council spent any money on the field, the council spent lots of money on it in the past.

The council also voted to spend $300 on a full page advertisement in for the county fair
