The Shelby District of Boy Scouts of America will hold its annual School Night for Scouting on Thursday, Aug. 26 in all Shelby County schools.

The first activity for the new Cub Scouting year will be a Cub Scout Fishing Rodeo and Family Cookout at Oak Mountain State Park on Sept. 17-18.

Cub Scouting members join a pack and are assigned to a den, usually a neighborhood group of six to eight boys. Tiger Cubs (first graders), Wolf Cubs (second graders), Bear Cubs (third graders) and Webelos (fourth and fifth graders) meet weekly.

Once a month, all of the dens and family members gather for a pack meeting under the direction of a Cubmaster and pack committee which includes parents of boys in the pack and members of the chartered organization.

Since 1930, the Boy Scouts of America has helped younger boys through Cub Scouting, a year-round program designed for boys who are in the first through fifth grades (7-10 years old).

Currently, Cub Scouting is the largest of the BSA’s three membership divisions. The others are Boy Scouting and Venturing.
