A Chilton County man was shot Saturday night in Montevallo by another Chilton County man who owed him money, officials said.

According to Montevallo Police Chief Steve Southerland, a call of shots fired was received at 7:44 p.m. at the University Texaco on Middle Street in Montevallo.

He said the victim crawled inside the Texaco to hide while the suspect threw a weapon over a fence and fled in a vehicle.

According to Southerland, the suspect identified as Danny Compton of Chilton County was arrested at 1 a.m. Sunday morning in Chilton County.

Southerland said according to witnesses, Compton owed the victim, identified as Rodney Griffin money.

He said when Compton attempted to collect the debt, the suspect used the gun.

Southerland said Griffin was later treated and released at UAB Hospital in Birmingham.

He said he expected Compton to be charged with reckless endangerment, first degree assault and under Project ICE, a federal program.
