At the peak of electric power outages as a result of Hurricane Ivan’s attack on the Shelby County/Birmingham area, there were some 233,311 residents without electric power, according to an Alabama Power spokesman.

According to Alice Gordon of Alabama Power Company, that was the count as of 3:30 p.m. last Thursday.

She said statewide there were some 825,701 people without power at the peak of electrical outages.

Gordon attributed the local outages to sustained heavy winds of 40 to 60 mph, rain soaking the ground and falling trees and other debris.

As of Monday afternoon, Gordon said some 16,408 people remained without power in the Birmingham/Shelby County area.

But she said it was expected that by Tuesday 99 percent of customers in the area would have power restored and that the entire state should have electric power restored by Friday.

Gordon said some 3,500 Alabama Power employees and workers from 21 different states responded to restore power in Alabama.

Crews came from as far away as New York, Vermont, Wisconsin, Texas, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Michigan, Missouri and South Carolina to aid the state following the wrath of the hurricane
