It may not have come exactly how coach Fred Yancey wanted, but Briarwood secured a playoff spot with a sloppy Class 5A, Region 3 win at Chilton County.

The Lions were flagged a whopping 21 times against the Tigers, giving up more yardage in penalties than the Tigers were able to gain in total offense.

&uot;We’ve got to do a better job of staying away from those types of penalties,&uot; Yancey said.

Still, the 28-18 victory was enough to earn Briarwood its 12th straight playoff appearance.

With just one region game remaining against Talladega this Friday night at home, the Lions (4-4) have cemented their place in the third spot in Region 3. They will travel to face the winner of the St. Paul’s-Williamson game in the first round of the playoffs after a regular-season finale against Lee-Huntsville.

Yancey said he was impressed with the offensive line, which paved the way for a 21-point first quarter for the Lions.

&uot;Josh Black, our big right guard, had his best game of the year,&uot; Yancey said. &uot;And Ryan Norton was back off the sick list and made some good blocks that enabled us to move the ball.&uot;

Riley Scruggs rushed for 96 yards and Andy Davis had two touchdowns for Briarwood
