Volunteering is an art in Shelby County. There are so many opportunities out there, it may even be a little overwhelming.

But one Shelby County organization is certainly in need of volunteers and aids the smallest among us.

CASAs (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) serve as a child’s voice in court.

Started in Shelby County by soon-to-be Associate Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court Patti Smith, the program operates through the Juvenile court of which Smith served as judge for 25 years.

Volunteers are assigned to the cases by the judge and serve the children.

A CASA training session will be held soon and the organization is seeking volunteers to meet the growing needs of the court system.

It’s a worthy organization and one through which a volunteer can definitely make a difference
