A Bibb County grand jury last week issued indictments for two men in connection with a drive-by shooting into a vehicle which began in Montevallo last December. Evidence was presented by Attorney Gen. Troy King.

Jimmy Lamar Killingsworth, 28, of Shelby and a 16-year-old from Chilton County were charged with four counts each, three different charges of capital murder for the slaying of Steven Spears and one charge of second degree assault against his wife, Monica.

Both victims were Bibb County residents.

According to Joy Patterson of the Attorney General’s Office, state law specifies various circumstances of killing that may be charged as capital murder. The murder of Spears involved three different elements that constitute capital murder, she said, &uot;attacking with a deadly weapon into a vehicle and killing a victim, firing a deadly weapon from a vehicle and killing a victim and killing a victim during the course of a robbery.&uot;

Both Killingsworth and the juvenile were arrested by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Department and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation and are being held in the Bibb County Jail without bond.

Earlier police reports indicate the two followed the Spears couple from a gas station in Montevallo where they shot Steven Spears while he was driving the vehicle. Monica Spears reportedly jumped from the car and tried to escape; but the assailants chased her down and beat her with a chain.

The attack occurred on Alabama Highway 139 on Dec. 10.

&uot;Unexpected violence invaded Bibb County on Dec. 10, shocking all who lived there,&uot; King said. &uot;The indictments are the first steps in the journey toward justice. I was proud to be able to be at the sides of the Spears family and to present this case to the grand jury in Centreville.&uot;

Patterson said if convicted, the defendants could face the death penalty or life imprisonment for the slaying of Steven Spears and one to 10 years for the assault of Monica Spears
