Every high school basketball coach wants a good point guard. And a good rebounder, good decision-maker, good scorer and a good leader, too.

Shelby County coach Charles Dickinson says he has all five of those things in one player – 6-foot-4 senior Brandon Burns.

&uot;He brings it all to the table,&uot; Dickinson said. &uot;And he brings it every night. Brandon is definitely our bell cow.&uot;

Dickinson moved Burns to the point guard position during postseason play, hoping to open up opportunities for other players like slashing guard Justin Mallory while getting the most from his star player.

The move paid dividends as Burns torched Briarwood in Friday’s sub-regional game in Columbiana, scoring 15 points with 11 rebounds, five steals, four assists and three blocks in the win.

Cortez Cotton scored 18 points and Mallory, 16, as Shelby County coasted to a 69-57 win over the Lions (23-7). Chris Bland added 12 points for the Wildcats.

Charles Hoke led Briarwood with 18 points while Larry Hedden added 15 for the Lions.

With the win, Shelby County advanced to Troy, home of the Class 5A, Southeast Regional tournament to face Charles Henderson yesterday (results were unavailable at presstime). The winner of that game will play in the semifinal round Friday at 2 p.m.

Calera 103, Washington County 69: Calera slammed past Washington County to advance to the finals of the 2A Southwest Regional tournament. Calera (28-5) will play Altamont Friday at 10:40 a.m.

Calera 76, Keith 54: The Eagles advanced to the regional tourney behind a 21-point performance by T.J. Green. George Drake had 14 points and Trey Russell 13 for Calera.

Huffman 69, Thompson 43: Gary Cunningham and Devin Quarthem each had 12 points for Thompson (12-20) as the Warriors fell to Huffman in sub-regional play.

Carver-Birmingham 50, Oak Mountain 49: Tyler Gallimore’s shot at the buzzer rattled of the rim as the Eagles (25-6) fell to Carver in Friday’s sub-regional game. Gallimore and Andrew Chesney each scored 11 points for Oak Mountain while Thomas Nordyke added seven
