Briarwood Christian School pulled a weekend sweep of Knoxville’s Christian Academy, improving to a 16-8 record.

Saturday’s win followed dedication ceremonies in which the Lions’ baseball field was named in honor of former Briarwood player Jay Kynerd.

Kynerd, the son of former BCS baseball coach and longtime Briarwood School Superintendent Byrle Kynerd, died suddenly last April from a heart attack at 34.

Briarwood finished off Christian Academy, 10-3, Saturday afternoon.

Senior Chris Liles hit his first career home run, a two-run shot to help lead the Lions to one of their first wins at the newly named Jay Kynerd Field.

Kevin Pence also had a home run and Evans Smith was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Left-handed sophomore Jeffrey Vincent threw his second consecutive complete game to improve to 2-0.

Briarwood 4, Christian Academy (Knoxville) 3: With the game tied at 3 in the bottom of the sixth, Jeffrey Vincent reached on an error and pinch runner John Maiden stole second base with two outs.

Chris Liles doubled to center field to drive in the winning run.

Reliever Jacob Butler recorded the final three outs, striking out two before outfielder Evans Smith made a running catch at the fence.

Briarwood 8, John Carroll 5: Kevin Pence earned his sixth win of the season, striking out nine in seven innings of work for Briarwood.

Evans Smith was 2-for-3 with two stolen bases while Jeremy Hall had two doubles and two RBIs. Grant Luke went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Shelby County 13, Holt 8: The Wildcats went ahead for good in the fourth inning by scoring four runs. Dave Cofer, Brandon Burns, Aaron Howard and Andrew Cooper each had two hits. Burns scored three runs, and Cofer scored twice. Josh Dikis pitched six-and-one-third innings to pick up the win.

Shelby County 13, South Lamar 7: Cofer went 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBIs to lead Shelby County. Burns, Dikis and Danson Thornburg each had two hits. Pitchers Jack Weaver and Burns combined to allow just five hits.

Vestavia 7, Thompson 3: Nick Harris accounted for Thompson’s only hit with a triple. He scored, along with Chris Myles and Daniel Harbin.

Thompson 9, Glasgow, Ky. 0:

Malachi Gandy allowed only two hits in six innings for the Warriors, while striking out four.

Robert Schofield went 2-fo-3 with two run and two RBIs. Joe Spanacino and Harbin also had two hits each.

Stanhope Elmore 2, Thompson 1: Stanhope broke open a scoreless game with two runs in the sixth inning.

Thompson pitchers Ryan Chase, Austin Lucas and Harbin combined to allow just three hits. Harris went 2-for-3, while Spanacino scored the Warrior’s only run, in the seventh inning.

Bessemer Academy 8, Kingwood 3: Adam Irby and Nick McNish both had hits for the Lions. Irby also had four stolen bases.

Kingwood 10, Taylor Road 0:

The Lions ended the game in the sixth inning by scoring six runs.

Brooks Webb picked up the win, allowing just four hits in six innings while striking out eight. Matt Owens had six stolen bases for Kingwood, while Lokin Spinks added five stolen bases.

Kingwood 5, Coosa Valley 4: Irby’s seventh inning single drove in Pearce with the game-winning run.

Irby went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Cam Spinks added two hits.

Bibb County 8, Montevallo 0: Corey Lovelady, Heath Picket and Chad Glass each had one hit to lead Montevallo.

Chelsea 11, Jemison 1: Chelsea scored 10 runs in the first two innings and cruised to the five-inning win.

Zach Richey allowed three hits in five innings to pick up the win. James Ward, Cody Andrews and Chris Sturdivant each laced two hits. Casey Morris added a three-run home run in the first inning, and Sturdivant homered to start the second inning.

Montevallo 9, Calera 2: Curtis Sherman, Matt Tracy and Corey Tumbloom each had hits for Calera. Nick Ellison and Jeremy Compton added RBIs.

Shelby County 8, Calera 5: Matt Tracy drove in three runs for Calera, while Trey Russell had three hits. Tracy, Jake Reynolds and Jason Adams each had two hits
