The Pelham Public Library received some good news recently.

The library was named a &uot;Blue Ribbon&uot; honoree by the Alabama Library Association. Pelham Mayor Bobby Hayes made the announcement at last week’s council work session.

According to a letter from Renee Lester of the Alabama Library Association, the Pelham library reached an &uot;outstanding level of achievement.&uot;

&uot;The staff and the board of the Pelham Public Library are to be commended for their commitment,&uot; the letter stated.

A presentation will be made to the library later this month at the association’s annual convention in Birmingham. Hayes said only a handful of Alabama public libraries have earned the designation.

According to the library’s website, it has a collection of about 46,000 materials including books, videos, DVDs and audio materials for every age group. Last year, the library had a circulation rate of 217,215 materials.

* The council also passed an ordinance to provide free membership to the Pelham Racquet Club and Ballantrae Golf Club for any retiring city employee who has served at least 15 years, or elected official who served at least 12 years.

In other matters, the council:

* Authorized Alabama Power to install 13 streetlights in the vicinity of Holland Lakes Sector One and Stonehaven Trail and a new pole near the intersection of Stonehaven Trail and Holland Lakes Drive South.

* Announced a public hearing will be held Monday, April 18, at city hall to change the zoning of property adjoining Deer Ridge Lake Subdivision off County Road 336.
