Pelham’s Jason McMillan dominated the distance runs and David Clyburn continued his stranglehold on the top spots in the jumping events, but it wasn’t enough to help the Panthers upend host Oak Mountain in the Shelby County track and field championships Monday.

Oak Mountain swept the meet at Heardmont Park with 197 team points in men’s competition and 259 points in women’s competition.

Pelham and Briarwood finished second and third respectively in both men’s and women’s team scoring.

McMillan was named meet MVP after placing first in the 400-meter dash, 800-meter run, 1,600 and 3,200.

Clyburn, who won the 110-meter hurdles and triple jump and placed third in the 300-meter hurdles, also won his third straight county high jump championship.

Clyburn cleared the bar at 6 feet,

6 inches – a full eight inches higher than the second place finisher – before declining further attempts.

He joined McMillan in earning All-County track honors.

Also named Men’s All-County track athletes were: Tyler Gallimore, Oak Mountain; Michael McClellan, Oak Mountain; Darius Hill, Pelham; Darnell Kelley, Vincent; David Rogers, Pelham; and Nick Ray, Calera.

Shelby County’s Randi Reaves and Oak Mountain’s Hannah Farmer were named co-MVPs for women’s competition.

Reaves won the discus throw and 200-meter dash and placed second in the 100 and 400 for the Lady Wildcats.

Farmer led Oak Mountain with first place finishes in the long jump, triple jump and high jump. She also finished third in the 100-meter hurdles.
