Three teams claim area titles – Chelsea, Calera, Briarwood host playoff games

High school baseball’s regular season has come to a close with four county teams qualifying for the AHSAA playoffs. Three of them earned area championships.

Calera, Chelsea and Briarwood Christian secured first-round home games by claiming area titles. Spain Park finished second in Class 6A Region 6.

Chelsea’s 6-0 record in 4A Area 8 earned the Hornets the right to host Andalusia in the first round. Chelsea closed the season at 20-3 overall.

After breaking the school record for most wins in a season, Briarwood Christian School set up a first-round matchup with Monroe County at Jay D. Kynerd Field. The Lions finished 24-11 overall and 4-2 in 5A Area 8.

Calera, the winner of 2A Area 8, was scheduled to play Red Level yesterday at Oliver Park.

Briarwood 9, Sylacauga 7: The Lions clinched the area championship as sophomore left-handed pitcher Jeffrey Vincent picked up his fifth straight win. He struck out six and walked four in six and two-thirds innings. Jacob Butler earned his fourth save when center fielder Brad Nichols corraled

a line drive in the gap to end the game with runners on first and third. Evans Smith was 2-for-4 while Grant Luke tripled and Kevin Pence had three RBIs for Briarwood.

Sylacauga 6, Briarwood 5: The Lions’ loss forced a late game to determine the area championship. Brad Nichols was 2-for-3 with a run scored and Evans Smith doubled and had an RBI for Briarwood. Dugan Nelson hit a solo home run for the Lions.

Chelsea 13, Calera 5: Dan Hill singled, doubled and homered for Chelsea before the game was called in the fifth inning due to lightning. Casey Morris struck out five in five innings pitched for the Hornets. Walker Kent scored three times and Doug Pate added three RBIs.

Chelsea 6, Holt 0: Zach Richey struck out five in a one-hit shutout for the Hornets. Doug Pate was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Casey Morris added two RBIs. The game was called in the sixth inning due to lightning.

Chelsea 10, Montevallo 3: Doug Pate went the distance, fanning 11 in seven innings for Chelsea. James Ward was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Zach Richey was 3-for-4 with two RBIs for the Hornets.

Chilton County 8, Shelby County 4: Dave Cofer was 2-for-4 and Brandon Burns had two RBIs for the Wildcats (12-16 overall), who finished 0-6 in area play.

Fairfield 7, Shelby County 6: Justin Mallory struck out seven in five innings and Chipper Jones was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for the Wildcats.

Shelby County 10, Fairfield 9: Justin Mallory pitched two innings and struck out four to earn the win. Catcher Dane Vansant was 3-for-3 with two RBIs for Shelby County. Andrew Cooper added three hits and Josh Dikis scored twice for the Wildcats.

Mountain Brook 7, Thompson 6: The Warriors dropped the last game of a round robin tournament to determine the final playoff qualifier for 6A Region 6. Chris Myles had three hits and Malachi Gandy tripled and knocked in two for Thompson (19-14 overall).

Thompson 11, Oak Mountain 6: Nick Harris’ solo home run and a three-RBI performance by Malachi Gandy helped lift the Warriors past Oak Mountain in the first game of the tiebreaker round robin. Austin Lucas struck out five in six innings pitched.

Thompson 7, Pelham 5: Nick Harris, Reade Hocutt and Ryan Chase each doubled to lead the Warriors past Pelham. Chase also earned the save in relief of winning pitcher Malachi Gandy. Ty Donaldson took the loss for the Panthers.

Kingwood 6, Cornerstone 5: Nick McNish stole home with the bases loaded and two outs to win the game for the Lions at home. Matt Owens earned the win, striking out eight in three innings. Brooks Webb was 2-for-4 and Cam Spinks added two RBIs for Kingwood. Beau Beggs had an RBI for Cornerstone and Jon Ray was charged with the loss.

Shelby Academy 9, West Ala. Prep 3: Josh Kervin hit a grand slam and Marcus Jones added a solo shot to lead Shelby (14-2-1). Jake Ingram was 3-for-3 with an RBI for the Raiders. Kervin earned the win with four innings pitched.

Shelby Academy 11, West Ala. Prep 5: Marcus Jones pitched four innings to earn his fourth win of the year for Shelby. Jake Ingram went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI while Josh Sharp went 2-for-2 and knocked in four for the Raiders. Jones went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double.

Shelby Academy 14, Prattville Christian 3: Marcus Jones tripled and had two RBIs while Jamie McClain had a double, two RBIs and three runs scored for the Raiders as they clinched the region championship.

Shelby Academy 12, Prattville Christian 1: Josh Sharp struck out six in a five-inning one-hitter. Austin Johnson went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs and Jake Ingram tripled and knocked in two for the Raiders
